British Air Force Typhoon jets have operated alongside France's air force in a joint strike on an subterranean weapons facility in Syria employed by the IS group, per a report from the UK's MoD.

The site, identified by reconnaissance, was thought to be storing arms and explosives, the statement said, and was located in mountainous terrain just north of the historic site of Palmyra in central Syria.

"The RAF jets employed laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to strike a several entry passages down to the site... initial indications indicate the strike was effective," officials stated.

There was no indication of any harm to civilians in the strike on Saturday evening and all the aircraft returned safely, the defence officials confirmed.

The British jets were supported by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

The Islamic State group - referred to as the so-called Islamic State - imposed jihadist rule over large swathes of Iraq and Syria until 2019.

"This operation underscores our UK leadership, and commitment to operate in unison with our partners, to eliminate any revival of the terrorist group and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the Middle East," the British Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary remarked.

UK warplanes have conducted overwatch operations over Syrian airspace to "deter any efforts to regroup" of the group subsequent to its military defeat at the battle of Baghuz in the year 2019, the ministry said.

"I must thank every member of British forces involved in this strike for their professionalism and their valour," Healey said. "Including them were numerous UK service members stationed over the holidays. This mission, to remove dangerous terrorists who threaten our way of life, demonstrates how UK forces are always on standby, throughout the year, keeping Britain secure at home and influential overseas."

In December, the American forces executed what it termed a "major assault" against IS targets in the country, after an attack resulted in the deaths of two US troops and a local interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The UN estimates Daesh still has an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 combatants in Syria and Iraq.
