Patients Discontinuing Weight-Loss Injections Gain Back Weight Four Times Faster Than People Using Diet and Exercise

Weight management often requires long-term strategies.

Fresh analysis indicates that individuals who discontinue popular GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain reduced body mass far faster than those who halt traditional diet and exercise programs.

Published data in a major health publication points out that while obese individuals often shed about a fifth of their body weight while on the medication, the weight comes back at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.

"People using such drugs need to be aware of the risk of fast weight regain when the therapy is stopped," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of regain suggests a reversion to original mass in about a year and a half.

Analyzing Approaches

The research, which looked at dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the results of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.

Researchers emphasize that people who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone usually have a less rapid weight regain—approximately 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.

The Reason for the Rapid Rebound

Doctors propose the mode of action of the drugs accounts for the amplified regain.

The injections mimic a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.

"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 concentrations far above than normal may cause the system to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also lessen responsiveness to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.

"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to appetite is no longer kept in check, making binge eating much more probable."

A Lifelong Condition?

Health authorities suggest the jabs for people with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.

Many experts argue that, given the significant potential of relapse, the treatment is often long-term.

This opinion is supported by drug manufacturers, who state that the findings "highlight the persistent nature of excess weight," akin to managing diseases like high blood pressure.

Patient Experiences

People who have discontinued the jabs describe a powerful resurgence of hunger.

"It was like something that goes on and you're instantly extremely hungry," described an individual.

The struggle is compounded if individuals have not adopted lasting lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.

Significant Interest

Survey data indicate that millions of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with demand being substantial.

  • Use is higher among women than males.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
  • Many obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

Ultimately, experts caution that while these medications are powerful tools for weight loss, they are not a magic cure and long-term success relies on ongoing lifestyle support.
