19 of the Russian's twenty-one victories have been won on hardcourt

A resurgent Daniil Medvedev won his first title for nearly 30 months with success over opponent Moutet in the Almaty Open final.

The Russian, a ex- number one, has experienced a challenging year, managing just a single victory at the major tournaments and undergoing a setback at the New York tournament.

His inconsistency on the tennis tour - and struggles with his service game in particular - led to him exiting of the top ten and eventually splitting with long-term mentor Gilles Cervara.

Currently training with his coach and his other coach, he has steadily improved in the past month - peaking in a hard-fought 7-5 4-6 6-3 win over Frenchman Moutet.

It is Medvedev's maiden title since the Italian tournament and maiden on a hardcourt since spring of 2023.

The win also signifies the Russian has achieved 21 victories at 21 different events.

"It's the first time I have attended a tournament with my two daughters together, so to win a championship is especially meaningful," said ranked player the champion.

"This championship is in honour of my second daughter Victoria, because the first title I achieved when my older daughter Alisa was born was for her."

Medvedev, the past champion, had failed in his previous six championship matches, including in Halle previously this season.

The player's defensive play style and recurring emotional displays on the playing surface had prompted observers to doubt if his ability to compete at the elite level was finished.

However the 29-year-old has altered his approach in the past month, attempting to come to the net and perform aggressively, backed up by an enhanced serve.

Medvedev fought back from a deficit in the initial set against the tricky Moutet, winning 4 of the final five points to gain the advantage.

The competitors exchanged breaks in the second set before the Frenchman, attempting for his maiden professional title, gained dominance to force a decider.

Moutet saved 4 initial opportunities in a competitive deciding set before the champion secured a break to fifteen to close out the victory.

Appropriately, the winner earned the win with a rally at the front of the court, with the Frenchman failing to handle a return after two hours and 38 minutes.
