Weather balloons transporting numerous packages of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was compelled to shut down for an extended period when numerous of them drifted across the national airspace.
Flight Disruptions
The airport closure led to the cancellation of 30 flights affecting six thousand travelers, with airport representatives alerting that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Officials confirmed that 25 meteorological balloons were detected entering Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with two of which ending up right above the aviation facility.
Approximately 14 of the meteorological devices launched over the weekend floated over the Vilnius area, which is home to Lithuania's capital city and close to the frontier with Belarus.
Illegal Goods Seizure
At least 11 balloons carrying eighteen thousand packages of illegal tobacco products have now been retrieved, though this number could rise, according to customs agents.
International Illegal Trade
While creating issues, representatives clarified that "Balloons with contraband - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are common occurrences in neighboring countries."
So far this year, 544 balloons have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were documented the previous year.
Cross-Border Effects
Simultaneously, the north-eastern Polish territory, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has registered in excess of numerous instances in which smuggled items were delivered from its adjacent country employing the balloons.
Smuggling Techniques
In response to questions about why criminals use a technique that proves especially affected by weather conditions rather than simpler to operate drones, representatives elaborated that "Meteorological balloons are rudimentary tools used by contraband transporters - they are less expensive than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Authorities continued that "The goal of law enforcement is to capture the greatest possible quantities of contraband and to detain organisers and perpetrators so that such operations become economically unsustainable and do not pose risk to passenger aircraft."
International Concerns
Such border infiltrations occur during a time of growing anxiety in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have caused air traffic disruption across the continent.
Similar occurrences in nearby states have caused EU officials to accelerate discussions about improving airspace protection throughout European airspace.
